Classroom Information
Attendance
Your child should be at school at 8:20 each day so they have time to check in, start
their morning work, and are ready to go when the tardy bell rings at 8:35. If your
child arrives after the tardy bell, please sign him or her in at the office. If your child is absent from school for any reason, please call the Sunnyside attendance line at
(651) 621-7601.
Communication Sheet
There will be a new communication sheet each Monday that should be kept in your
child's take home folder all week and returned to school the next Monday. It will have information about our week, along with a section for students to list their homework at the end of each day. Please check the communication, or "gold sheet," each evening and initial that you have seen it. There is also a section to record how many minutes your child has read at home, or jot a note for Mrs. Lundeen to see when she checks the sheet each morning as your child arrives at school.
Take Home Folder
Please make sure that your child brings his or her folder to school every day! Parents should go through the take home folder each day after school for homework or notes from school. Remove completed work to discuss with your child and keep at home. Return any homework and the gold sheet in the take home folder each day.
Homework
Third graders should expect to have about 30 minutes of homework each day. This includes 15 minutes of reading. Students may have homework from their math class, and occasionally unfinished work that didn't get done in class. It's helpful to establish a routine for homework, such as doing it at the counter while dinner is cooking or every day right after dinner. Third graders may need a little help getting started, yet should be able to do their homework on their own with your support. It is supposed to be a way to reinforce learning and not meant to be a problem, so please let Mrs. Lundeen know if your child has difficulty completing homework.
Lunch Money
It looks like most people pay on-line these days, yet if you do send lunch money to school, please make sure that it is labeled with your child's name and lunch PIN number, especially when sending cash!
Recess and Lunch
Students go outside for recess every day before lunch unless it is raining hard or below zero. Please make sure your child has appropriate clothing for the weather. Remember to label everything such as hats, boots, and jackets. We always have lots of black snow- pants, so it's easy to get them mixed up or lost. You are welcome to come have lunch with your child any time! Just sign in at the office and wait near the lunchroom for the third graders to come in at about 11:05.
Snack
We have a short, ten minute snack break each afternoon. Students may bring quick, healthy snacks to eat, such as fruit, veggies, or crackers. Chips, candy, and other junk foods are not allowed. Please avoid nuts, as some children are allergic. Students may also bring water bottles; juice, sports drinks, and pop are not allowed in the classroom. The Sunnyside fountains have new, filtered water bottle refill features, so your child may get fresh water as needed throughout the day as long as it does not interfere with learning time.
Birthdays
You are welcome to send non-food remembrances on your child's birthday if you wish. Food treats are no longer allowed by the district, yet the students always enjoy little things such as pencils, stickers, bubbles, or whatever you think. Students sometimes enjoy getting a book for our classroom library, or a puzzle or game for snack break/free time. Birthdays that fall on a non-school day are celebrate on the nearest school day. Summer birthdays may be celebrated on the half-birthday or at the end of the school year, just let me know what works best.
